Art Hsu’s Film “FP” Receives Premier at SXSW

A film Art Hsu plays a lead role in “THE FP” will receive its premier at South by Southwest (SXSW) as part of the SXFantastic series.  South by Southwest (SXSW)  is a set of film, interactive and music festivals and conferences that take place every spring (usually in March) in Austin, Texas.  

The South by Southwest Film Festival  is one of the most popular and largest film festivals in the United States.  It is  generally considered one tier below Cannes and Sundance, and on the same tier as the Venice Film Fesitval or Toronto International Film Festival.

EWP Actors Conservatory Offers On Camera Commercial Class

Aaron Takahashi, instructor and core performing member of the Asian American improv group COLD TOFU and currently recurring in ABC’s show starring Mathew Perry, “Mr. Sunshine” will teach an on camera commercial class beginning Tuesday, March 1st for 8 weeks.  Aaron has been in over 40 commercials and will take actors through the entire process – from signing in at the audition, to booking and shooting the job, Aaron will give actors the skills they need to feel confident when walking into an audition. Class size is limited.  If interested contact mtokuda@eastwestplayers.org

Yumi Iwama is “Kickin It”

Fellow ACTS member Yumi Iwama just booked a role on Disney’s new tv show “Kickin It” which will be shooting next week.  She also just completed doing a voice over for McDonald’s.  Congratulations, Yumi!

They all shot a commercial with ACTS very own member James Taku Leung! His Oreo commercial with the above sports icons is now in full broadcast nationwide and online at DSRL.com. Part 2 of the spot will begin airing on 1/23/11.  He also just finished filming a commercial for Jim Beam and also completed voice over work on Justin Bieber’s 3-D movie “Never Say Never.”  Congratulations, James!

Jon Lee Brody Lands Lead Role in “The Hurricane Kid”

Fellow ACTS member Jon Lee Brody will star in the upcoming IMAX 3D MMA movie “The Hurricane Kid” directed by Jesse V. Johnson.  He has also been cast as a WWII fighter pilot in ”Under the Shadow” directed by James Fargo (director of “The Enforcer” with Clint Eastwood).

Aaron Takahashi has a recurring role on this ABC show which stars Mathew Perry.  Perry stars as Ben Donovan, the self-involved manager of a second-rate San Diego sports arena who begins to re-evaluate his life on his 40th birthday.  Aaron also just completed shooting a Bud Light and McDonald’s commercial as well as a print job for Hyundai.

Stephen Tobolowsky Gives Workshop

If you’ve seen such films as Mississippi Burning, Thelma and Louise, Single White Female, Groundhog Day, Momento  or any other number of films, you’ve probably seen Stephen Tobolowsky.  Or television shows like GLEE, LAW & ORDER, HEROES…you’ve more than likely seen him.  On November 9th, 12 lucky ACTS members will have the opportunity to take an improvisation class from Stephen (sorry, class is already full).

CRIMES OF THE HEART

Two ACTS members are part of East West Players upcoming production of Beth Henley’s CRIMES OF THE HEART.  ACTS member and longtime instructor of EWP Actors’ Conservatory Leslie Ishii is making her directorial debut on the EWP mainstage and newly joined ACTS member Maya Erskine will be portraying the role of Babe, who has just shot her husband.  The event brings her delightfully dysfunctional sisters together.  This Southern Pulitzer Prize winning classic with an Asian American cast will be an unforgettable night of laughter and tears in East West Players style!
